
Julie London (nee Peck; September 26, 1926 - October 18 1999) was an American singer and actress who toured for more than 40 years. London was a torch performer and was well-known for her soft, smooth vocals. She recorded over 30 albums of jazz and pop standards from 1955 until 1969. The album she released as her debut "Cry Me a River", which she recorded was inducted into The Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001. London was nominated for an Golden Globe Award for 1974 for her performance in Emergency! as Nurse Dixie McCall. Born in Santa Rosa, California, to vaudevillian parents, London was discovered while working as an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles, and she started her acting career. London's 35-year acting career started in the film industry in 1944 and included roles as the female lead in a variety of westerns. She starred along with Rock Hudson in The Fat Man (1951), with Robert Taylor and John Cassavetes in Saddle the Wind (1958) as well as together with Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958) and with Robert Mitchum in The Wonderful Country (1959). In the late 1950s, she signed a recording contract with Liberty Records, marking the beginning of her professional musical career. In 1969, she released her last studio album. However she continued to be a star in television's Emergency show in the role of Dixie McCall, a female nurse. (1972-1979), where she was co-starring alongside Bobby Troup. The show was created by her former husband Jack Webb.
